The skill of painting encompasses diverse working conditions and skill sets required. Painters are segmented into interior and outside, house painting or other, and by the kinds of craft labor they perform. An advantage of interior painting is the potential for having year round work.

The qualifications include abilities the procedures of mixing paint, boxing gallon containers, thinning paints and appropriate thinners, and all phases of preparation from pressure washing and cleaning, to scraping, sanding and applying recommended primers -- with which the painter has familiarity. (like for the treatment of rust at various stages, or paint peeling on wood, plaastic or glass surfaces).

Product knowledge with the types of paint and their application is important, as are all safety measures. This could be working with exposure to fumes and combustables for solvent based liquids, and taking preventative measures such as the wearing of respirators, and proper storage of liquid container items.

The specialty of the paint projects being completed has a lot to do with materials specified, block walls often mean block fillers, high durability environments often translate to mixing and applying epoxy and other special protective coatings. Whether the projects are maintenance coatings, repaints, or custom new-work has much to do with the duties being performed.

Painters are aware of time efficient procedures as it relates to commercial and house painting costs from initial setup to leaving the project. This can include access from automated booms and scaffolding to extension ladders and step ladders while employing methods for applying paints in a professional and skillful manner, like cutting-in and brushing, rolling paint and spraying techniques.

Painting is physically demanding and requires balance, with capabilites to work in held, turned and bent postures over sustained periods, even throughout the day.

The intricacies of painting normally mean that painters have experience in terms of years but this depends on the skill level of the position
